While I have not noticed the nonstick coming off, I do have to agree that these are not a good 5 year pan. They are poorly balanced, that meaning the handle is heavier than the pan and it will not sit flat on the burner, everything you cook slides toward the handle. I'll continue to use these until I find a replacement....then out they go!

Ontario Knife 7025 7-Inch Butcher Knife Review

(More customer reviews)As the name implies, this is a butchering knife, and that aint no lie. My father bought 3 of these a few years back, and gave one to me to help him slaughter beef and pigs. Being "old school", my father whetted his knives on the old stones. His technique kinda sucks, so of course they don't get honed into shape like original. Luckily, he was smart enough to purchase a B&D wet wheel grinder that I use with excellent results every time.
The Old Hickory knives my dad bought sit in a drawer and he uses some stainless steel variety with a white plastic handle, honed on a whet stone. It won't even hold an edge long enough to cut thru hot butter. The Old Hickory knife I have keeps a pretty good edge, and even my brother in law was quite impressed with it (he is a fanatic about sharpenining knives). Even after my dad took a hand grinder to my knife (after mistaking it as his...he complained they were "too thick to sharpen"), it still holds an edge and manages to slice right thru a bull hide with ease. I think I'm gonna scarf up those knives and keep them for myself.
I also have the chef knife, and love it too. It also keeps a very good edge and is easy to sharpen. Definitely recommend that too. I used to have a stainless steel version, but got tired of sharpening it every stinkin time I used it.
The only drawback to these knives by Ontario Knife is the hand-washing required. Don't even attempt to put these into the dishwasher unless you like rusty damaged knives. But, like any good tool it requires some care to keep it in good condition. I hand-wash mine and towel-dry them immediately. The Old Hickory knives I have were bought about 8 or 9 years ago, and they have a potential life span of decades.
I'd love to get the entire set of these things for my kitchen. They are easy to sharpen, hold an edge, and have substance to them. Originally was going to give it a 4 star rating for the hand-washing, but instead giving 5 because they are so durable, functional, and fit well in your hand.

(More customer reviews)I have had a plastice one with the built in strainer for years...and must admit I hated it, but didn't know why...IT was to smooth and slippery to really grab the flesh. Especially for the produce we get in Alaska, you really have to work for your juice, be from limes, lemons or any other citrus. Things are just not quite as fresh as they are in the states. This reamer rips right through these tough limes and lemons with hardly any effort. WHAT A RELIEF this tool is! I even did my own product test between the old and new with the same batch of limes...I was able to get nearly twice as much juice in less than half the time. If you like to use fresh citrus in your cooking and bartending, but don't want the commitment of a "juicer"...this is a wonderful, easy to store tool.

(More customer reviews)The previous poster is wrong. I am a pastry chef. Creme Brulee is best when it is 1 inch thick or less. That gives you a better ratio of crunchy top to silky cream.
You do have to be careful not to drown your brulees getting them in and out of the water bath with these dishes, and I have had some trouble with chipping, but they work perfectly well for creme brulee.

(More customer reviews)Since I live in dungeness crab country I've been searching for the best crab shell cracker. This tool looked good but in practice hasn't really worked out. The thing will break open the larger leg pieces but it mashed the meat inside and it sprayed crab juice all over. While I expect some of this, it was worse than the regular nut crackers I usually use.
Look instead for the Progressive International, the 7-inch seafood scissors. These are working out way better. You only need one pair of them to share around the table per 3 people.

Revolving Cake Decorating Stand Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a dedicated (amateur) home baker who bakes several times a week, and there are two final frontiers still unknown to me: yeast breads and fancy layer cakes. Unlike simple Bundt cakes or single-layer cakes, layer cakes are composed of two (usually three) or more layers of carefully arranged cakes glued together with some sort of icing (fudge, chocolate, buttercream, etc.). If you're trying to assemble and frost a layer cake on a stationary cake stand, it's much harder to achieve a smooth finish when frosting the outside as you have to keep manually turning the stand, which can cause the cake to wobble and become crooked as you're trying to ice it.
I decided to take the plunge and invest in an Ateco revolving cake stand. It has a very solid cast iron base with a lovely vintage white finish and a 1/8" aluminum top. It also comes with a nonstick pad that can either be used under the stand to keep it anchored to the countertop, or on top of the stand to stabilize your layer cake.
There are several different companies (Magic Line, Wilton, Ateco) that manufacture similar cast iron revolving cake stands, but I chose Ateco based on prior brand purchases (cake decorating equipment) and the fact that the stand is constructed in the USA (other than Nordicware, Libbey and Anchor, it's increasingly difficult to find items made in-country!). It came highly recommended by America's Test Kitchen as well. The packaging was very secure and I received my stand without any scratches or dents.
This is a hefty stand, both in weight and cost, that will stand up to a lifetime of use and is well worth the investment if you're a professional baker, pastry chef, or a home cook who makes a lot of layer cakes. If you're just a casual layer cake baker, consider Ateco's US-made plastic revolving stand for 2/3 less. But this is the rare piece of kitchen equipment that is not only useful, but aesthetically pleasing as well; I leave mine displayed on my baker's rack when not in use.

At first I was a little skeptical about the manufacture's claim to having razor sharp teeth but now that I've tried it - I know they are for real. The grater seems to effortlessly shave through everything without tearing or shredding the food. And b/c it was so effortless, I could just hold the grater over my food and grate right onto it. I would highly recommend this grater and will definitely be looking to getting some of their other graters. Cuisipro well done!

Hamilton Beach 6-Cup Food Processor - 70450 Review

(More customer reviews)Kitchen supplies are like an addiction to me. I spare no expense on only the best. Kitchenaid mixers, Le Creuset whatever, All Clad this and that. But one day I was short on cash and decided I needed a food processor. I saw this in a grocery store for, like, $20. I said, "Screw it, this will work until I can afford a $100 Cuisinart." That was a year ago, and I have had no desire the replace this one yet. I grind nuts in it. I've made big batches of pesto in it. Hell, I make pie crust in it on a REGULAR basis (Making pie crust in a food processor, though much easier then using a pastry blender by hand, is absolute HELL on a food processor.) . This little bad boy takes the abuse and asks for more. If it blows up tomorrow, Ill have gotten my moneys worth, and even if I have the money for a better name brand, I would probably just go out and buy another Hamilton Beach. I'm only giving it 5 stars because Amazon wont let me give it 10. Seriously, 'Worth the Money' is an understatement.

The table itself is gorgeous. Highly polished, very substantial wood. This seller had the cheapest price by far that I could find on the internet for this table. Although the quality of the manufacturer is known as on the higher end, in light of the price, I thought this would be a cheaply made item and crossed my fingers that it would at least look presentable and serve it's purpose.
On the contrary, the construction is first rate. The wood is first rate. The table looks much more expensive than what I paid. In fact, we purchased this table to replace a very large table we purchased at Macy's for over $1000.00 and the wood really looks very similar and construction is very similar as well!
All and all, extremely happy with the table and the seller and would definitely purchase similar item from same seller again in the future.

New measuring cups are heavier because it's NOT PYREX anymore! After 1998, when Corning Glass stopped making Pyrex. (Think fiberoptics and bankruptcy, etc.) They sold off their 'household' glassmaking and it reformed as World Kitchen. PYREX is borosilicate glass and very resistant to wear and chip and cracking due to exposure to heat or quick changes in temperature. This is why Pyrex and Kimax other borosilicate glasses are used for chemistry glassware. (Timex was to watches as these were to chemlabware! Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!) Corning has licensed the name of 'Pyrex' to World Kitchen, but nothing else about it is 'corning glass'. (As an aside - Corning made great glass - of all kinds. A world-beater in their day. Management screwed them over going down the wrong economic road. Do check out their lovely glass museum in Corning, NY!) NOW, World Kitchen makes their 'pyrex' measuring cups out of ordinary soda-lime glass (kitchen drinking glass type). This is NOT safe to expose to heat changes!!!! (Think wear safety goggles - like you WERE working in a CHEM LAB!) I suspect that soda-lime glass is denser than borosilicate, but the actual measure wall thickness may be different now than before, and, thus, this accounts for some of the weight difference. If you want my opinion - find 'vintage' Pyrex Measuring Cups somehow and they will last multiple lifetimes. I have one of my mom's and she has two of her mom's measures. My new ones cannot hold a candle to the old ones (30 to 60 years old) and aren't worth a tinker's damn. Happy times in the kitchen!

CDN Multi-Mount Oven Thermometer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this based on the Cook's Illustrated review. The first thing I noticed is the hanging hook doesn't fit the heavy racks in our Viking oven. Fortunately the magnet mount works well and I stuck it on the back wall of the oven under the light. The third mounting method is a flip down wire stand. I haven't tried this but it seems like it will be fine for a flat surface like a cookie sheet or pizza stone.
Aside from mounting issues the thermometer seems functional. I'd prefer a bigger more readable model that I can read through the oven window.

Wilton Checkerboard Cake Pan Set Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this set not from Amazon but from my local Michael's store - convinced by the packaging that it would be easy to make a presentable cake using their instructions.
Used two Duncan Hines cake mixes instead of recipe on box - packaging says you don't have to use their recipe so that seemed safe enough. Reading other reviews, it appears that may have been a bad idea, as the Wilton recipe is a stiffer batter. Box should have included notes to that effect.
As mentioned by another reviewer, the divider insert does not fit firmly at all - it should hook over the edges of the pan for better stability or something - even when I weighted the insert down with a soup can, pouring the batter in made it slide around and leak into other layers.
Lifting the insert out using the tabs per instructions was a mess. On the 2nd pan, I tried coating the insert with Pam spray first which helped a bit.
The tip about pouring your batter into pastry bag or ziploc bag to pipe into pans helped quite a bit and was a good tip.
Summary:
The pans themselves seemed fine, decent non-stick coating and handles make them easier to move in/out of oven. The insert fits loosely at best and is flimsy. I had to throw out the cake and make a standard layer cake instead because the batter did not in any way stay in the intended circles. Was a waste of $$ and will be donating to Goodwill, maybe someone else will have better luck.

(More customer reviews)We frequently pound chicken for our favorite recipes, which is why I was looking for the best meat pounder I could buy. My research led me to an old favorite, "Cook's Illustrated." They rated the Norpro Offset Meat Pounder the best of all the ones they tested. They liked the offset handle design, which relieved some of the tension on one's wrist.
I have to concur with "Cook's Illustrated." I have less wrist strain with the offset handle. The pounder has a good heft, and makes quick work of the meat. The disk is 3 and 3/4 inches in diameter. The overall length is 11 and 1/4 inches. My kitchen (spring) scales weight the Norpro at 1 lb. 10 ozs. The chrome surface is smooth, and could not be easier to clean. One only has to look at the photo to see how easy.
I almost did not buy this because of the price. However, we use our meat pounder a lot, and the Norpro Offset Pounder has been worth every penny to my wife and I.
Buy the best -- scream once.
