Vietnamese Coriander Plant - rau ram - daun kesom Review

I ordered several of these plants in early January and they arrived in excellent condition in spite of the super cold weather. The shipper put a heat pack in the box although that probably wasn't necessary since it was filled with white foam peanuts. The specimens exhibited nice green foliage. Nothing was mushy or wilted. The plant stake/label had Freeman Herbs printed on it.
Rau ram is a great addition to spring rolls or egg rolls. If you like lemon, you will probably like this herb.
I've got a larger specimen living in a pot outdoors. It is able to withstand brief dips below freezing next to a brick wall and under a breezeway. I've seen the thermometer dip to 22 degrees (for a couple of hours or less). The leaves did not freeze, and the plant is still green and healthy. The same cold snap that killed my Thai basil and tomatoes didn't seem to bother the rau ram.

Vietnamese coriander (Persicaria odorata, syn. Polygonum odoratum, Polygonaceae) is an herb whose leaves are commonly used in Southeast Asian cooking. Other English names for the herb include Vietnamese mint, Vietnamese cilantro, Cambodian mint and hot mint. The Vietnamese name is rau ram, while in Malaysia and Singapore it is called daun kesom or daun laksa (laksa leaf). In Thailand, it is called pak pai. It is not related to the mints, but the general appearance and odor are reminiscent.
Above all, the leaf is identified with Vietnamese cuisine, where it is commonly eaten fresh in salads and in raw spring rolls (goi cuon). Bowls of ph (beef noodles) are also typically garnished with Vietnamese mint. It is also popularly eaten with h t v t l n (fertilized duck egg, known as balut in the Philippines).
In Singapore and Malaysia, the shredded leaf is an essential ingredient of laksa, a spicy soup, so much so that the Malay name daun laksa means "laksa leaf."
In Australia the plant is being investigated for a source of essential oil (kesom oil).
The Vietnamese coriander is a perennial plant that grows best in tropical and subtropical zones in warm and damp conditions. It prefers full sun. The top of its leaf is dark green, with chestnut-colored spots while the leaf's bottom is burgundy red. Its stem has sections. In cooler regions grow as a house or patio plant. It is very easy to grow.
The plant you will receive is growing in a 4 inch pot and is well branched and about 6" tall.

First off, nothing I have purchased from Hirts has produced anything like the pictures, I'm positive they turn the saturation way up on the photos for showmanship. Despite my carrots not looking very much like the photo they were not a disappointment & the seeds came with instructions good enough for a novice planter. I did dock a star or two since what I saw in the photo and what I got were the most different of anything Ive gotten from this seller. In fact I wonder if my pack had atomic red carrots by mistake.
In the Rocky Mountain region around 30% of my seeds sprouted but this was my first time planting carrots. The carrots that resulted were more of a beet red than a purple, making them look like long bright beets. The colored flesh is only a millimeter deep, meaning only a scratch reveals the orange inside. The shape of the carrot was rather normal instead of tubular like online. The flavor was more earthy than a commercial carrot. I still recommend them, the shock value is there and they were great for coloring up sushi, salads, and steaming them takes out any bitterness.

Absolutely unique, purple-skinned carrots with deep orange flesh. They look amazing in salads or as a steamed vegetable. Roots have a high antioxidant and vitamin content, so are best eaten raw and are perfect for making carrot juice.
